It’s been four months since I started to seriously write. And I think like most beginning writer’s I searched for the best writing tools. But after all the fussing around and using all of them and settling on one; after a while I just ended up using a simple word processor and spreadsheet. For one you only have the one file to worry about, not a folder structure; and they’re simple to use. And second, they’re more flexible; you’re not stuck in their interface.
This is something I had to learn on my own. Not too many writers use those tools, most use a word processor, because they work. But then again, this depends on your writing method.

I love my Word 2007 and my notebook. I might do the spreadsheet (even though I dislike excel with a passion). I can see how that gives you a great overview over scenes and general plot structure, so I’m considering it an option, though I’ll probably use my notebook as longhand backup as always, oldfashioned me

It took me a long time to realize that the spreadsheet tool would be good here. I hate spreadsheets as well. I do not use them at work or anywhere else. But in this case for me, it won hands down.
Mind you, as I become more sophisticated, I might evolve into using something else later.
